Tae Kwon Do’s roots go back to Korea’s ancient martial arts, specifically Taekyun and Subak, which date back to the Koguryo era (37 BC – 668 AD). Fast forward to the 1950s, Korean martial arts masters, including General Choi Hong Hi, began developing modern Taekwondo, blending traditional techniques with influences from Karate and other martial arts.
The name “Tae Kwon Do” was officially adopted in 1955, with “Tae” meaning foot, “Kwon” meaning hand, and “Do” meaning way or discipline. The sport gained popularity worldwide, and in 2000, it became an Olympic sport. Today, Tae Kwon Do is practiced globally, emphasizing kicks, punches, blocks, and patterns, with a focus on physical fitness, mental discipline, and self-defense.
